The processor is comprised of:

  1. Data Path, which performs arithmetic operations
  2. Control, which tells the datapath memory and I/O devices what to do according to the instructions of the program

and may also contain:

  1. Data and Instruction cache
  2. bus
  3. Branch prediction unit - a subunit of control
