OpenShortestPathFirst (OSPF) was also created as a response to ["RoutingInformationProtocol"]'s shortcomings. It is an open protocol defined in [http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc1247.txt RFC1247]. A very popular protocol (2003) now it is a LinkState based protocol.
